Infância e Vocação

Maria Rita ficou órfã de mãe aos sete anos e, desde jovem, demonstrava compaixão pelos mais necessitados. Ainda adolescente, transformava sua casa em um ponto de acolhimento para pessoas em situação de rua, doentes e excluídos sociais.

Aos 18 anos, ingressou na vida religiosa e adotou o nome Irmã Dulce em homenagem à sua mãe. Seu trabalho social começou nas ruas de Salvador, ajudando doentes e desabrigados, muitas vezes enfrentando dificuldades e resistência por parte da sociedade e das autoridades.

Obra Social

Irmã Dulce fundou, em 1959, a Obras Sociais Irmã Dulce (OSID), que começou com um improvisado abrigo para doentes em um galinheiro, anexo ao convento onde vivia. Com o tempo, a obra cresceu e se tornou um dos maiores complexos de saúde do Brasil, atendendo gratuitamente milhares de pessoas por ano.

Mesmo com a saúde frágil — ela teve problemas respiratórios graves por mais de 30 anos —, Irmã Dulce nunca deixou de trabalhar. Era conhecida por sua humildade, fé e dedicação incansável aos pobres, tornando-se um símbolo de caridade e amor ao próximo.

Reconhecimento e Canonização

Irmã Dulce foi indicada ao Prêmio Nobel da Paz em 1988, com apoio de nomes como Dom Hélder Câmara e o então presidente José Sarney. Após sua morte, foi beatificada em 2011 e canonizada em 2019, tornando-se a primeira santa nascida no Brasil.

Legado

A história de Irmã Dulce é exemplo de solidariedade, fé e entrega ao próximo. Sua obra continua viva através da OSID, que segue promovendo o cuidado humanizado com milhares de atendimentos diários.
